Western PA Orienteering Club

The Western Pennsylvania Orienteering Club (WPOC) is the only club of its kind in Western PA. The club was founded in 2003 after the fall of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Orienteering Club. WPOC was incorporated as a non-profit in Pennsylvania in November 2008 and received 501(c)(3) status in early 2009. Orienteering is a family of sports requiring navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse, usually unfamiliar terrain, and normally moving in a fast-paced fashion. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, orienteering has evolved to become more inclusive and has developed many variations. For example, mountain biking, hiking, canoeing and geocaching can all incorporate elements of orienteering into a fun and challenging outdoor experience.
