Public Schools in Washington, Fayette and Greene Counties

One of the state's 29 intermediate units, Intermediate Unit 1 (IU1) was established in 1971 to serve the schools in Fayette, Greene, and Washington counties. During its ﬁrst year of operation, Intermediate Unit 1 rented space in California, Pa., and employed 245 people. Today, Intermediate Unit 1 employs more than 600 people and offers 143 services and programs. Since April 2009, Mr. Charles F. Mahoney has served as executive director. Mahoney is supported by an assistant executive director and department directors in nine different departments. Intermediate Unit 1 has an annual budget of $69 million. Funding sources include state subsidy, government and private foundation grants, contributions from districts and fees for services.
