For 80 years, the Constructors Association of Western Pennsylvania (CAWP) has been the premier trade association in the heavy and highway construction industry in the region. Representing over 200 construction and construction-related companies operating in the thirty-three counties of Western Pennsylvania, CAWP members have a proud heritage of constructing our region’s infrastructure, which includes highways, bridges, tunnels, airport runways, dams, waste treatment facilities, site preparation and utilities installation. With a skilled workforce of well-trained men and women from several Unions, including the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #66, CAWP contractors aim to construct world class infrastructure right here in our backyard.
The IUOE represents over 7,000 members in western Pennsylvania and three counties in Ohio, and has provided contractors with competent and qualified Operating Engineers for over 100 years. The Western Pennsylvania Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship Training Program is a non-profit educational training program organized for the purpose of providing those qualified workers to employers in the construction industry. Situated on 137 acres in New Alexandria, PA, the Operating Engineers’ new training complex boasts several designated equipment training areas, a large maintenance shop, and two buildings housing multiple classrooms and offices. In addition to classroom and hands-on equipment instruction, a large number of training courses and industry-necessary certifications are available such as Crane Operator Certification, Construction Safety Outreach and CDL training and testing. When not training at the site, apprentices work for CAWP contractors, giving them the opportunity to earn a paycheck, medical benefits, and retirement benefits while gaining additional knowledge and skills.
The CAWP Future Road Builders is a virtual pre-apprenticeship program that allows participants to learn about a career in highway construction by interacting with each phase of a virtual construction project. The program is free to all. For more information, visit the Future Road Builders site at www.cawp.org/page/virtual-pre-apprenticeship.
CAWP’s partnership with the IUOE Local #66 serves as a first-rate example of the power of labor and management cooperation. CAWP contractors and Operating Engineers are partnering to rebuild western Pennsylvania’s aging infrastructure through hard work and collaboration.
Local #66 works collectively with the Constructors Association of Western Pennsylvania (CAWP) to provide benefits to both members and contractors. Both are committed to furthering the heavy and highway industry while promoting quality, safety and excellence.
